The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has reported two major drug busts, one involving the smuggling of cocaine through Mumbai airport and the other targeting an opium trafficking network in Madhya Pradesh. These operations reflect the agency's ongoing efforts to combat narcotics trafficking across international and domestic networks.
In the first case, a Liberian national arriving in Mumbai from Sierra Leone was apprehended at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International (CSMI) Airport on Friday. Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officials intercepted the passenger after observing that his trolley bag was unusually heavy, even when emptied. A closer inspection revealed two packets of a white powdery substance concealed in a false compartment within the bag. Field tests identified the substance as cocaine, weighing 3,496 grams and valued at approximately ₹34.96 crore. The passenger was taken into custody, and further investigations are ongoing.
Meanwhile, in a separate operation, the DRI dismantled a domestic drug trafficking syndicate involved in the smuggling of opium. Acting on a tip-off, officials learned that a significant quantity of the narcotic was being transported from Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, to Mumbai in a truck. Surveillance was conducted overnight near a toll plaza in Kasara, and the vehicle was intercepted early Wednesday morning. A detailed search of the truck led to the discovery of 9.69 kilograms of opium, confirmed through field testing.
The truck driver, tasked with delivering the consignment, was questioned and provided information about the supplier and intended receiver. Further investigations led to the arrest of an opium cultivator in Madhya Pradesh, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to four. The DRI has described this syndicate as a key player in the trafficking of locally grown opium, valued at several crores.
These operations underscore the DRI's resolve to curb both international and domestic drug trafficking. Officials reiterated their commitment to dismantling criminal networks and preventing narcotics from reaching Indian markets. Both cases are under active investigation to identify additional links and accomplices. The DRI has called these successful busts a significant step in its mission to safeguard society from the growing menace of drug abuse and trafficking.
