In the aftermath of Pune rape case, the Mumbai Police has initiated a massive crackdown on criminals.
The police have cracked the whip against thousands of accused, including the history-sheeters accused of crimes against women under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Over 200 locations, including 14 premises linked to gambling and other illegal activities, have been targeted so far.
As per reports, the police have also set up 'nakabandi' at 113 locations to trace anti-socials.
The crackdown, which began on February 28, have resulted in the arrest of 12 fugitives and actions were taken against 54 people under section 142 (violating externment orders) of the Mumbai Police Act.
Additionally, 16 people were arrested for possession of illegal weapons. A total of 15 cases were filed for drug possession, and action taken against 56 people for allegedly “engaging in suspicious activities”.
The police have also asked bus depot managers to improve the lighting arrangements, beef up security measures and verify suspicious individuals roaming on the premises. Security measures have also been enhanced at one of the city's largest bus depots located in Shivaji Nagar, Govandi, the report added.
It is pertinent to note that the 37-year-old accused, a history-sheeter with half a dozen criminal cases against him, had sexually assaulted the 26-year-old woman inside a stationary state transport bus in Pune's busiest bus station Swargate depot.
