There has been a rise again in the cases of sexual violence against women in the state and Mumbai has topped the list. Pune is on the second position, while Nagpur is on the third position. In the last four months, maximum 325 cases of rape were reported in Mumbai, while 89 cases were reported in Pune, according to the police crime report.
In four months from January to April, 325 cases of rape were registered in Mumbai. It has the highest number of 90 crimes in the month of March. 78 cases were registered in the month of January, 60 cases were registered in February and 89 cases were registered in April. 89 rape cases took place in Pune city.

January saw the highest number of 28 rapes. 24 incidents occurred in February, 13 rape cases were registered in March and 24 cases were registered in April. In Nagpur, 85 cases of rape were registered in the last four and a half months. The highest number of 26 rape incidents took place in the month of April. February recorded 14 rape cases, as per the report by Loksatta.
Exploitation by neighbours
Most of the accused include boyfriends and relatives. Often physical relations are carried out with the lure of marriage. A complaint of rape is filed due to rejection of marriage. Often only close relatives have consensual physical relations with women. Rape is reported after the relationship breaks down or after the family notices.
