Mumbai has seen a rise in mobile snatching cases, with multiple arrests made across the city. Three major incidents were reported in Chembur, Bhandup, and Andheri in the last three months with the recent one being occurred this month. Suspects were caught using CCTV footage and mobile tracking. Police recovered over 100 stolen phones.
First Incident
In the first case, two men were arrested in Chembur for robbing a man of his phone. The incident took place early on March 1. Mangesh Das, a software developer, was walking near Axis Bank in Tilak Nagar Colony when the two suspects spotted him using his phone. They turned back, approached him, grabbed the phone, and fled on a motorcycle. Das tried to chase them but failed.
Police reviewed CCTV footage to track the suspects. Informants helped identify them and retrieve their mobile numbers. Tracking their phone locations, police teams were sent to Uran, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Mahim, Atal Setu Marg, and Mankhurd. The suspects were finally caught and identified as Hussain Babujan Sheikh, 23, and Alphayaz Abdul Rauf Sheikh, 21.
Hussain was found with a Samsung A14 5G Green, which they admitted was stolen earlier from Dharavi. The stolen phone from Chembur, a OnePlus 10R worth INR 40,000, was recovered from Alphayaz. Both suspects have a history of criminal activities. Police are investigating their past offences.
Second Incident
In another case, Bhandup police arrested two young men with criminal records on January 15. They were accused of stealing a motorcycle and snatching phones from two victims. The incidents took place on January 13 at Ishwar Nagar bus stop and Mangatram Junction on LBS Road.
The suspects used a stolen bike to commit the crimes. Railway police assisted in tracking them. They were caught at Dhule train station while attempting to flee to Madhya Pradesh. Authorities are reviewing their past criminal activities.
Third Incident
In the third case, three men were arrested in Andheri on December 31 for stealing mobile phones. Police recovered 120 phones worth INR 9.18 lakh. The suspects were identified as Ravi Waghela, 34; Prasad Gurav, 31; and Vivek Upadhyay, 27.
One of the incidents took place on December 31 at around 2:50 pm in Agarkar Chowk, Sahar Road, Andheri East. A pedestrian was using his phone when two men on a motorcycle approached. The pillion rider grabbed the phone, and they fled.
The victim reported the crime immediately. Police checked CCTV footage and arrested the suspects the same day. The men were caught in Malpada Dongri, Andheri East. Investigations continue to find out more about their past crimes.
