Andheri MIDC Police have arrested a man in the case of purchasing stolen vehicles. changing their chassis number, number plate and selling it again in the market.
The culprit Alam Shaikh (32), is a scrap dealer by profession. Police have also seized four cars from Sheikh. Police suspect that Alam has altered other cars and illegally sold them and are still investigating the matter.
According to the information, Alam Shaikh, who lived in Jogeshwari, worked as a mechanic in a garage. He had ample knowledge about cars and their brands. Sheikh used to buy the vehicles at cheap rates which were damaged by accident and would always steal a new vehicle and take them to the garage, putting the body number, number plates of the damaged vehicles on the stolen vehicles.
When the police were informed about Sheikh's thefts, the police took Alam Shaikh into custody in connection with a car theft and questioned him. Sheikh confessed to his crime in the inquiry. Police said that Sheikh has stolen several vehicles from Mumbai and Navi Mumbai too. The police have also seized four stolen cars from Sheikh.
The police are still interrogating Sheikh and trying to collect the information about stolen vehicles from him.
