A 19-year-old youth named Sheikh Zia Hussain, a resident of Mumbai, was arrested for allegedly attacking three passengers with a knife on board a suburban train in Thane. He was pinned down by others and handed over to the police, an officer said on Thursday, February 20.

The incident took place on the 9:47 am Kalyan-Dadar fast local on Wednesday morning, February 19, over an argument about alighting at an unscheduled stop.

The injured passengers have been identified as Akshay Wagh, Hemant Kankaria and Rajesh Changlani.

Hussain, who had boarded the train at Kalyan, intended to get down at Mumbra. However, upon being informed by fellow passengers that the train would not halt at the station which falls under the slow line, he attempted to exit forcefully as the station approached. In the process, he jostled and pushed other commuters, triggering an argument that quickly escalated into a scuffle. Hussain allegedly pulled out a knife from his pocket and attacked them.

Hussain was soon overpowered by other passengers and handed over to a Railway Protection Force team, while the injured passengers filed a case at Dombivali Railway Police Station.

The victims were provided medical assistance before a formal complaint was lodged at the Dombivli GRP station.

He has been booked under section 118(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for intentionally causing grievous hurt using dangerous weapons.

"Sheikh has no previous criminal record, but we suspect he is addicted to drugs. Further investigation into the matter is underway," railway police said.
