According to reports, the Maharashtra education department plans to start three new medical colleges at Satara (Pune region), Alibaug and Sindhudurg from this academic year onwards.
Moreover, there are 19 medical colleges in the state with approximate 3,300 seats for the MBBS degree courses as of now. In addition, the construction is reportedly to start soon at Krishna Nagar in Satara after land measuring 62 acres was acquired for the proposed college.
Currently, the state health department has handed over the 350-bed Satara Civil Hospital, which has also developed a 300-bed district COVID-19 facility, to the medical education department.
On the other hand, Maharashtra Higher Education Minister Uday Samant had earlier stated that the State Higher and Technical Education Department has been contemplating physically reopening colleges and universities in Maharashtra. Speaking about the same, he stated, “However, keeping the possibility of a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in mind, the state task force has asked us to wait. That is why there is some delay in implementing this decision,”
Moreover, he added that the vice-chancellors of state universities have been discussing the resumption of classes in colleges and universities with their local district collectors. In addition, a final report will be submitted in the next 15 days.
