Atharva Educational Trust has proposed a unique project to the state government. The plan is to establish India's first ever vertical university in Mumbai. It is likely to be located in Malad, a western suburb in Mumbai.
The project is currently under review by the department of higher and technical education.
The Trust, led by BJP MLA Sunil Rane, already has several degree colleges in the city. The proposal has been received by the Department of Education. Now, the project would require state cabinet approval due to its self-financed nature.
The state government has shown support for vertical institutions. The main benefit is that they require significantly less space than traditional universities. This innovative approach was approved during a state cabinet meeting on July 19. The first establishments are set to be located in the suburbs, the city, and nearby Thane City.
The concept of vertical universities was born out of the need to address the land shortage in Mumbai. This approach has already been adopted in cities like Washington, D.C., Tel Aviv, Israel, and New York.
Sunil Rane, the founder and executive president of Atharva Group of Institutes, attended a hearing as part of the state department of higher and technical education's scrutiny procedure, where he offered several recommendations to the officials.
The Atharva College of Engineering, the Trust's first educational establishment, was founded in 1999 and has received an A+ rating from the NAAC. The college has been a pioneer at the forefront of education since 2013 and has achieved significant milestones. It has now set up a working receiving station for the "PRATHAM" satellite of IIT Bombay.
The policy for establishing a vertical university requires the institution to have an independent building and a minimum built-up area of 15,000 square metres, among other requirements.
