Plans are being made to start a 'palliative care' facility for patients at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) run TB hospital in Sewri. Although there is a discussion about setting up a separate ward for this, the health department of the BMC is currently considering it. If this service is started, TB patients who are not affected by drugs, who need support, treatment and care till the last moment, will get relief from this palliative ward. The ward will be in a new building and will have an equal number of beds for both men and women.

Dr. Lancelot Pinto, noted pulmonologist and epidemiologist at PD Hinduja Hospital, said palliative care wards are a good idea in all branches of medicine. Especially in diseases that leave patients “disabled and severely injured”.

The main objective of palliative care is to improve the quality of life of patients and take care of their physical, mental and emotional needs. Health organisations insist that palliative care should be given priority along with treatment of tuberculosis.

Palliative care is important in severe cases of tuberculosis when treatment is not possible. Recent studies have shown that palliative care can improve patients' lives.
