Rajesh Tope, Minister of Public Health and Family Welfare in Maharashtra, speaking to the media stated that the state government has decided to fill all 17,000 vacancies in state-run hospitals and primary health centres, adding that it plans to constitute a central authority system to purchase medicines for them.
In an interview with Mumbai Mirror, Tope spoke about the health infrastructure of the state, adding that a large number of vacancies in the health department could prove to be dangerous, especially in view of a pandemic. He also spoke about how with the outbreak of coronavirus, as he started speaking to doctors and medical practitioners, he realized the response of the state was hindered by the lack of human resources.
The vacancies that are to be filled are of doctors, nurses and other health workers at the village level. Moreover, modelling on the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation, the central authority for the procurement of medicines will be based.
However, the Health Minister opined that the state is unlikely to witness the second wave of coronavirus infections. He added that as most surveys indicated that a present of antibodies is about 55 per cent of the population, it can be concluded that there is a healthy resistance to the coronavirus.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra on Thursday, August 20, reported 14,492 fresh cases of the coronavirus taking the aggregate to 6,43,289.
