A 24-year-old man, who was declared brain-dead at Global Hospital in Parel following a tragic accident, has become a beacon of hope for four individuals through the donation of his organs. His family’s decision to donate his kidneys and corneas has given others a new lease on life.

Hospital Staff Pay Tribute

On Wednesday, the staff at Global Hospital paid their respects as the young man’s body was moved out of the hospital. The man, a resident of Parel, had been involved in a severe accident on August 19 while riding a scooter with his cousin. After losing control of the vehicle, he fell and was struck by a passing truck, which resulted in devastating head injuries. Despite minimal external wounds, he suffered significant internal brain bleeding, leading to his brain death. This is defined as the complete and irreversible cessation of all brain activity, including that of the brainstem. Despite being rushed to Global Hospital, doctors were unable to reverse the young man’s condition. His mother, who had been the backbone of the family since her husband’s death ten years ago, made the difficult decision to donate his organs, thereby saving the lives of others.

Act of Kindness

Family members described the young man as someone who was always kind and ready to help others. They believed that his mother’s decision to donate his organs was consistent with his compassionate nature. After his father’s passing, the young man had taken on the responsibility of supporting his family, hoping to provide his mother with some relief. With his tragic death, his elderly mother and younger sister, who is still in school, are now left to cope with the profound loss.

Guard of Honor

In recognition of the family’s selfless contribution, the hospital organized a guard of honor on Wednesday. The donated organs were provided free of charge to those on the waiting list, a list that continues to grow. It is noted that one person's organs can potentially save up to eight lives, making organ donation an incredibly powerful gift. Dr. Bharat Shah, General Secretary of the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC), highlighted the critical need for organ donations, with over one lakh people currently on the national waiting list and the number increasing every ten minutes. Dr. Shah emphasized that the guard of honor is a gesture of respect for the donors, who, through their selflessness, save lives and become true heroes.
