A proposal has been sent to the civic administration to install escalators in the subway of two South Bombay prime railway stations i.e. Churchgate and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Churchgate are one of the busiest railway stations with lakhs of commuters traveling every day. These days, especially after the collapse of the foot over bridge outside Times of India building, the CSMT subway has resulted in being more congested.
To allay fears and decongest both the stations, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had planned to set up escalators at the subways, which connect directly to the railway stations.
An official said that the CSMT area has several big hospitals and they realised that many people, especially senior citizens and pregnant women take the risk of crossing roads in order to avoid climbing steps in the subways. This is the reason they felt escalators will help our citizens. They are hoping to get a budget provision for this work, after which they will take other approvals.
According to a civic official, they have planned to install seven and four escalators at Churchgate and CSMT station respectively. The A ward has already sent the proposal to the administration for its approval. After the Himalaya foot over bridge collapse on March 14, there has been a lot of speculation regarding the condition of the existing bridges at various stations.
Notably, BMC had asked for the re-audit and asked for a new structural report for 39 bridges in the city along with other bridges in both the suburbs.
