The twin city of Mira Bhayandar has been facing issues with unfinished cement-concrete (CC) road construction at various locations. To deal with the potential risks associated with them, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has taken the initiative to start rebuilding these roads.

Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Katkar has taken a personal interest in this matter. After returning from West Bengal, where he served as a general observer for the Kolkata Dakshin constituency, he immediately started checking the ongoing CC road locations.

Katkar has issued instructions to the officials of the public works department. The directive is to make sure that the excavated roads are temporarily laid, grouted, and properly compacted using road rollers.

This is to provide a smooth, motorable surface in the interim. The rebuilding process involves the use of a water-bound macadam (WBM) mix, along with gravel, asphalt, and grouting.

The city has a road network spanning 300 km, of which 21 km are concreted. The MBMC has already given out 11 packages of work orders for the construction of 84 more cement roads to various contractors.

The entire road concrete project may cost around INR 1,034 crore. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has approved the MBMC's proposal for a loan of INR 500 crore from a nationalised bank for this purpose. The MMRDA will also provide an additional INR 387 crore.

But the sites and half-built CC roads increase the risk of accidents for both drivers and pedestrians. There is also a concern about potential waterlogging during the monsoon. These roads have been incomplete for several months at most locations. Road contractors have also been instructed to put up warning signs and implement suitable barricades.
