The lanes connecting Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) and Mumbai coastal road are set to partially open at Thadani Junction on July 11. According to the city administration, vehicles will be able to use the two-two single lanes of the sea link. The project is about 91.58 per cent complete.
But, the local administration has stated that some work still needs to be done on the northern side. Hence, not all lanes of the sea link will be opened yet.
In a recent order, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to start one arm of the connector lanes by July end. So far, the installation of the bow string arch girder has been completed.
The Coastal Road Project will help in reducing traffic congestion in commuting towards South Mumbai. It is expected to save about 34 per cent of gasoline and 70 per cent of travel time. Moreover, they would bring down air and noise pollution.
In April, the first 136-metre-long steel Bow Arch String Girder, weighing about 2,000 tonnes, was successfully installed to connect the two major bridges. It marked a big milestone in the construction of India's largest "arch bridge".
