For the past few years, traffic jams have been a problem at the gateways of Mumbai and Thane. To solve this issue, the Ghatkopar to Anand Nagar Elevated East Expressway will be constructed. The work on this project, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is expected to be completed in four years. This project will provide direct access to Navi Mumbai, the eastern suburbs, and beyond, while also connecting to South Mumbai and Thane. It is claimed that this project will speed up travel between Thane and Mumbai, saving both fuel and travel time.

Thane city, which is adjacent to Mumbai, the financial capital of the country, has been rapidly urbanising over the last few years. Many citizens of Thane commute to Mumbai daily for work. A large number of these commuters rely on rail and road for transportation. However, due to the significant increase in the number of vehicles and the inadequacy of existing roads, congestion has become a pressing problem.

Traffic jams at the gates of both cities leave citizens baffled as fuel and time are wasted due to this dilemma. To address this issue, the state government has decided to construct the Ghatkopar to Anand Nagar East Elevated Expressway. The project will be executed through MMRDA. The groundbreaking ceremony for this project was conducted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a program in Thane on Saturday. Consequently, work on the project will begin soon, with a deadline for completion set for September 2028. Signs indicate that the elevated East Freeway will be available for traffic after four years.

Features of the Project

This project will help reduce traffic congestion in both Mumbai and Thane, expediting travel for citizens. Along with a reduction in travel time, fuel consumption will also decrease. This extension will be a part of the Mumbai and Thane Outer Ring Road, providing a faster and more direct road network that avoids internal roads for travel. The Elevated East Freeway will alleviate traffic pressure on existing roads and connect important routes, making it easier to transition from one route to another.
