Nearly 66 mishaps have taken place in these three years on a section of Mumbai-Pune expressway. According to reports, a 3-km stretch of the ghat section on Mumbai-Pune expressway has seen 21 deaths between January 2018 and February 2021, whereas it has left 39 people seriously injured.
The section, also known as ‘black spot’ area, falls in Dheku village in Khalapur. Drivers often violate the 50km speed limit on the slope area, causing mishaps.
The entire expressway ghat section stretches over 15 km. The accident-prone stretch has slopes with four curves along the stretch.
As per the data given by Raigad district police shows 10 deaths took place in 2019, five in 2020 and six so far in 2021.
In order to reduce the number of accidents, drivers must exercise utmost care on the ghat section and also follow the speed limit, said regional transport officer.
Highway traffic cops have revealed that the black spot zone has reported mishaps every alternate day. Moreover, the highway traffic police hardly do night surveillance.
The MSRDC engineers stated that rumblers, blinkers, reflectors and signages are being placed in this section. “Suggestions are invited to reduce mishaps,” said the engineer.
Two days ago, on February 18, one person was killed and while two others were injured in two separate accidents on Mumbai-Pune Expressway in Raigad in the early hours of the day, police said.
