Despite the political pressure was built up to open the Mumbai-Trans Harbour link on December 25, to pay tribute to former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) has clarified that the inauguration will take place after it is completely ready for operational.

However, with its yet awaited inauguration, now it has come to light the opening has been pushed for February 2024.

This has attracted controversy from the oppositions. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray accused the ruling government of tremendous discriminatory treatment Maharashtra faces as a state!

"These are just a few of the infrastructural works that this regime has nothing to do with, apart from inaugurate, and yet are delaying it. Surat Diamond Bourse was shown to the world in a hurry, but in Maharashtra, MTHL and Uran Line awaits inauguration, Digha Railway Station awaits inauguration for more than 8 months. The delay is either because they want to inaugurate closer to election dates, or the VIPs don’t have time for Maharashtra. Or maybe, push a few more crucial industries to their 'favourite state' before Maharashtra can have its infrastructure used by its citizens. Whatever it is, the citizens suffer due to the absolute hatred the current regimes have for Maharashtra," he added.

According to recent update, around 97 per cent of work is completed on the Mumbai-Navi Mumbai connector sea bridge.

The pending tasks, including electrification, pole installation, toll booths, and system integration, are yet to be finalized by the implementing agency, officials stated. However, one of the main impediments to the MTHL’s opening involves pending works related to traffic control mechanisms and automatic toll collection, deemed essential before its operational commencement.

Additionally, discussions around toll rates have surfaced, with an initial proposal suggesting an exorbitant toll of INR 500, which was later considered unfeasible by the Chief Minister’s Office.

Plans are underway to propose a substantial subsidy to reduce the toll burden, possibly by 40-50%, especially in the initial phase to prevent commuter backlash.

Apart from this, several other major infrastructure projects are lined up for Navi Mumbai, which include, Navi Mumbai Airport, Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link and Third Mumbai.

These projects will reshape the city's connectivity and urban dynamic, addressing persistent transportation challenges, managing rising population and fostering economic growth.
