Thane Municipal Corporation ropes in IIT Mumbai to redraw the traffic plan
SHARES

Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao has decided to redraw the traffic plan of Thane with the help of IIT Mumbai after witnessing a big difference between the traffic plan prepared six years ago to solve the problem of traffic congestion in Thane city and the current changed traffic situation in the city. In this plan, the stress on the traffic due to the changed nature of traffic, increased traffic of school buses and other buses, traffic of solid waste, traffic of railways in construction will be studied in detail.

It will study how to introduce water transport through the creek along with cycle tracks, pedestrian arrangements. Apart from this, the structure of the transport system to reach the metro, railway, parking system, and instructions regarding traffic congestion at Three Hat Naka will also be studied in this reorganisation.

The Thane municipal area has undergone massive urbanisation in the last few years. Along with the growing population, there has been a huge increase in the number of vehicles in the city. Besides, there is heavy traffic from JNPT Port at Uran towards Nashik, Gujarat. This is creating a problem of traffic congestion in the city. Metro, road widening and other projects are adding to the dilemma. To overcome this dilemma, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) had prepared a traffic plan for the city. A comprehensive transport plan for the entire municipal area was prepared by the TMC as part of the Metro Rail planning.

The work of this plan started in 2010. It was finalised in 2018. In it, there were suggestions like drawing of metro lines, the Satis project in Thane East, new suburban railway station between Thane-Mulund, Anand Nagar to Saket coastal road, subway. Considering the growth of Thane city, the traffic management was done according to the population density. But there is a big difference between the plan prepared six years ago and the current changed traffic situation in the city.
