The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has said that Mumbai is officially FASTag ready with three major toll plazas coming under the electronic bill collection system. Located in Airoli, Mulund Eastern Expressway, and Mulund (LBS Marg), these toll plazas were enabled on the NETC FASTag platform. This platform is linked to the Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link plaza and Vashi toll plaza, thus offering an effortless toll payments experience for motorists.

NPCI also expects all parking lots in Mumbai to gradually implement 100 per cent contactless parking. As per data provided by the NPCI, the NETC FASTag transaction count was at 12.48 crore in November with the transactions valued at INR 2,102.02 crores. Similarly, around 12.23 crore FASTag transactions were conducted in October 2020, amounting to INR 2,137.16 crores in value.

FASTag has seen wider adoption thanks to digital providers like ICICI Bank and Paytm, among others. Users can also get a FASTag sticker for their vehicle from toll booths, select bank branches, UPI apps, as well as e-commerce platforms.

This FASTag sticker goes onto the windshield of the car which is quickly scanned and authenticated at the toll plaza even as the vehicle is moving. The user receives a text message for each transaction or deduction conducted on their FASTag account.

However, customers will have to be mindful of the balance left in their FASTag account before each trip. Recharging your FASTag account is fairly easy and can be done online using a wide-range of UPI apps as well as debit/credit cards, net banking, etc.
