The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections are pending from 2022. The election issue is part of the infighting between Shiv Sena factions and the BJP's efforts to gain more control over affairs in India's financial capital.

Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction) leader and former Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray demanded that the long-delayed civic polls in Mumbai be held at the earliest. The BMC is currently under an administrator appointed by the Government of Maharashtra. Aaditya Thackeray made this demand in the Maharashtra Assembly. Aaditya Thackeray, himself MLA of Worli constituency, said in his speech that a big and important metropolis like Mumbai has been without a corporator for two years now. He added that the posts of officers in 15 civic divisions are also vacant.

Apart from Mumbai, major municipal elections like Thane or Pune will be held from 2022 onwards. Currently, senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Bhushan Gagrani is serving as the Municipal Commissioner as well as the administrator of the civic body.

In February, the BMC presented a budget of INR 59,954.75 crore for the year 2024-25. This budget of a single city is bigger than the budget of many Indian states. This is one of the reasons why political parties are eager to control the municipal corporation, which has been held by the Shiv Sena for decades.
