The High Court has given Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena’s Ravindra Waikar another four weeks' time to clarify his position on the petition of Uddhav Thackeray's (UBT) Amol Kirtikar, who is challenging the election of the Mumbai North West constituency in the Lok Sabha elections.
Taking cognizance of Kirtikar's plea, the court had issued summons to Waikar along with other candidates and defendants during the previous hearing. Also, Kirtikar was ordered to make statements on the allegations made by the petition. The matter came up for hearing on Monday before a single bench of Justice Sandeep Marne. At that time, senior advocate Anil Sakhre, on behalf of Waikar, requested the court for more time to explain his stand on the allegations leveled by Kirtikar. The court accepted it, adjourning the case to October 3, giving four weeks time to file an affidavit.
Through a petition, Kirtikar has demanded that Waikar's MP should be canceled and he should be declared the elected candidate from this constituency. On the day of counting of votes, the application for recounting of votes was filed as there was a discrepancy between the votes. However, several serious errors were committed by the election officials appointed to conduct the counting process. Kirtikar has claimed that it affected the result of the election. As the rules related to the counting process were violated, voting by 333 fake voters also affected the result. Kirtikar has also claimed in the petition that the election officer hastily counted the votes arbitrarily.
