Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Wednesday warned of taking strict measures if people continue to roam around unnecessarily on streets despite the nationwide lockdown in place. Pawar hinted that the lockdown may be extended if some continue to behave irresponsibly.
There have been reports of people coming out on streets while violating the lockdown norms placed by the central and state government in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.
The Deputy Chief Minister stated that the people should behave and learn lessons from coronavirus victims in the United States, Italy and Spain. The people should respect the sacrifices made by doctors, police, health and sanitation workers, who are risking their lives to fight the deadly virus, Pawar added.
The people venturing out, gathering at vegetable markets poses a serious threat not only to them but to others as well. “Offences will be registered for non-compliance. However, if such irresponsible behaviour continues, the government will have no option but to make people sit at their home,” the Free Press Journal quoted Ajit Pawar as saying.
Pawar further said that if people continue to gather, it will make the government’s lockdown a futile exercise. Earlier, NCP leader Sharad Pawar had said that people should brace for an economic crisis due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Ajit Pawar sought a ₹25,000 crore package from the centre for Maharashtra due to health and economic crisis emerging amid the coronavirus outbreak. The central government is yet to release the Goods and Services Tax of Maharashtra which amounts to ₹16,654 crores. Pawar had demanded the same to be released before March 31.
As of April 2, in Maharashtra, the number of positive COVID-19 cases have increased to 338 while the death toll is 13. Of the 338 cases in the state, 181 COVID-19 patients are from Mumbai.
