Will Devendra Fadnavis become BJP's national president?
SHARES

There is a buzz that Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is likely to be the BJP president.

Following a less-than-satisfactory performance in the Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has initiated organizational changes.

Recently, the party replaced state presidents in Bihar and Rajasthan. Now, discussions are ongoing about the national president’s position. With the current president, JP Nadda, joining the Modi government as a minister, speculation is rife about who will be the next president.

Nadda has been on extension since the expiry of his term. Sources said the BJP has narrowed its search over a few names for the party chief post. Two names have reportedly emerged from Maharashtra: party general secretary Vinod Tawde and another is Fadnavis.

Among the frontrunners is Devendra Fadnavis. Fadnavis’ meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Saturday, July 27, fueling speculation that he may replace JP Nadda.

However, there is no confirmation on yet on whether Devendra Fadnavis will be sent to Delhi before the assembly elections or not since Devendra Fadnavis is the main face and strength of BJP in Maharashtra, if he goes to Delhi, it may adversely affect the performance of BJP in the assembly elections.

According to the BJP’s constitution, an individual can only serve as the national president twice. Nadda’s term ended on June 6, 2024, raising the question of who will succeed him.

Given the challenges in finding a new national president, the party is likely to appoint an executive president temporarily.
