Maharashtra Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad visited Dharavi after a man who was tested positive for the coronavirus or COVID-19 died on Wednesday. The minister, who is a Congress MLA from Dharavi assembly constituency, visited the slum to examine the situation.
“I visited Dharavi and took stock of the situation after the first coronavirus cases were reported here,” Maharashtra Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad informed.Gaikwad also held meetings with the police and municipal officers regarding the coronavirus outbreak in Dharavi. “There is no need to panic but the lockdown should be strictly followed,” Gaikwad said.
Earlier, a 56-year-old man from Dharavi who was tested positive for the coronavirus or COVID-19 died at Sion Hospital where he was admitted. Meanwhile, other cases of the COVID-19 was also reported from Dharavi which one of Asia’s biggest slum.
Dharavi has a massive population as compared its area and the risk of the coronavirus spread in the slum is much more probable and intense.
On Friday, the third positive COVID-19 case was reported from Dharavi in three days. A 35-year-old doctor in Dharavi has tested positive for nCOVID-19. The doctor has a clinic on the main road in Dharavi and is the third patient from this area to have tested positive.
"His family is put in quarantine, they'll be tested today for coronavirus. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation tracing his contacts. The building where he lives will be quarantined and all high-risk contacts will be traced," a BMC official said.As per the official statistics, the number of positive cases for the coronavirus in Maharashtra has increased to 423 while the death toll has also risen to 19. In Mumbai, the number of positive COVID-19 cases have soared up to 235.
