As a majority of forts in and around Mumbai are in ruins, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi in Maharashtra has decided to restore six forts of Mumbai.

For this, at a meeting presided over by the Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Amit Deshmukh has directed to prepare a joint development plan for the conservation of half a dozen Mumbai forts for development.

He suggested that the development plan for six forts in Mumbai - Sewri, Worli, Bandra, Dharavi, St. George and Mahim - should be prepared immediately.

These important instructions have been given in the review meeting held at the Ministry on October 5 regarding the fort under the leadership of Amit Deshmukh. It has also been directed to immediately report on the conservation of 18 protected forts.

The meeting was also attended by Vilas Thorat, Deputy Secretary of Cultural Affairs department and Dr Tejas Garge, Director of Directorate of Archaeology and Museums.

“The development plan of all the six forts in Mumbai should be prepared immediately. At the same time, in the next eight days, three different development plans should be submitted, namely a development plan for total sea forts in the state and a development plan for a total of 60 forts protected by the state.

The administration has sanctioned INR 5 crores for the conservation work of two forts in Latur district,” informed Amit Deshmukh.

The work of repairing, repairing and conserving these forts is being done by the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums. However, how can a financial expert be appointed to provide loans from financial institutions for the conservation of these forts? The possibility of this should be investigated. The report given by these expert advisors should then be submitted to the government,” said Amit Deshmukh.

Mumbai city itself has around a dozen forts. Moreover, in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), which also comprises parts of Mumbai’s adjoining coastal districts of Thane, Palghar and Raigad, there are close to three dozen small, medium and big size forts.

Some of these forts come under the jurisdiction of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) while some of them come under the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums of Maharashtra.
