A two-year-old child survived a fall from the 13th-floor apartment of a high-rise building in Dombivli area of Thane district due to a man’s quick thinking.

A video of the act going viral on social media and drawing widespread praise from netizens, who hailed him as a real-life hero.

The incident took place last week in Devichapada locality and the child sustained only minor injuries, officials said.

According to the CCTV footage, Bhavesh Mhatre, is seen rushing to catch the child. Although he wasn’t able to fully grab the child, however, his swift action helped break the fall, significantly reducing the impact when the child hit the ground.

An eyewitnesses said the child fell while playing in the balcony of her 13th floor flat. "She slipped, was hanging precariously for some time at the edge of the balcony and then fell," an eyewitness said as quoted by PTI.

In the video, it can be seen that Mhatre, in a blue shirt, can be seen walking away from the building when he suddenly looks up and realises that the child was about to fall from the balcony of her 13th floor flat. He rushes towards the spot in a bid to catch the child.

Bhavesh Mhatre said he was passing by the building and didn't think twice before moving forward since he was determined to save the child's life.

"There is no religion greater than courage and humanity," he told reporters.

A civic official hailed Bhavesh Mhatre's act and said there were plans to felicitate him publicly.
