On Saturday, February 19, Mumbai was officially elected as the host for the 2023 International Olympic Committee (IOC) session, highlighted reports. In light of this, accounts are speculating that this could mean the possible election for the host country for the 2030 Winter Olympics and sports programme for LA 2028 Olympic Games.

Based on accounts, the session will be conducted in May or June in 2023. Christian Klaue, the Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Director of the IOC took to Twitter saying, "Mumbai in India will host for the first time in history an #IOCSession. The 86th Session 1983 was held in New Delhi. 40 years later the IOC Session will be back in India."

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, also took to social media to share the update.

For those unversed, the IOC session is an annual meeting of IOC members that entail 101 voting members as well as 45 honorary members. They discuss and decide on prominent activities of the global Olympic movements that comprise adoption or amendment of the Olympic Charter, the election of IOC members as well as office bearers and the election of the host city of the Olympics.

It has been reported that Mumbai attained a historic 99 per cent of the votes in favour of its bid from participating delegates, with 75 members endorsing its candidature in the Beijing session. This confirms that India will host the IOC meeting for the first time since 1983.

State Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray took to social media to say, "Mumbai hosting the 2023 International Olympic Committee Session is not just a matter of great pride but also an opportunity to push India ahead on the sporting horizon. Grateful to Smt. Nita Ambani ji for her efforts to bring the 2023 session to Mumbai, Maharashtra!"

Similarly, Maharashtra cabinet minister Aaditya Thackeray took to Twitter to appreciate the monumental decision.
