In an attempt to make the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses smarter, the transport corporation has installed LED display screens and speakers on its buses, mostly on the Backbay-Wadala bus depot routes along with some parts of the western suburbs, under the Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS) project.
The ITMS project is a part of the Passenger Information System (PIS) initiative and till now, 2,809 buses have been laden with the LED screens and speakers which will inform the passengers about upcoming stops.

The ₹112-crore ITMS project was approved by the BEST committee in March 2018 but the transport company missed the deadline i.e. within nine months. Now the project is to be rolled out in phases and accordingly, the civic body has allotted ₹34 crore in its February 5 budget.
Meanwhile, BEST plans to launch a mobile application as a part of the project which would display the estimated time of arrival (ETA) of the BEST buses and the number of buses that would arrive at a particular depot in the next 10 minutes.
