To increase the safety of passengers, Central Railway has started installing panic buttons on platforms. Panic buttons are being installed in front of the women's compartment especially so that women passengers can send an alert to the security personnel in case of a crisis. It started from Byculla station, where a total of 6 panic buttons have been installed. Here, 2 buttons each forward and backward are mounted on each platform.
A decision was taken after the survey
Railways had conducted a survey in which women said that they feel scared while waiting for the train in front of the coach at night. Many times there have been incidents of taking advantage of the absence of security guards to grab mobile phones or valuables from women.
An officer said installing a panic button in front of the women coach would alert people around and scare off criminals. Earlier, the railways had experimented with putting buttons in women-only coaches. It was not a success during the test as the train had to be stopped several times by pressing unnecessary buttons.
How does the panic button work?
A big red button is placed on the pillar in front of the women's coach. When this button is pressed, the red light flashes along with the sound. Hence, the railways will be able to know at which end of the platform the passengers need assistance.
The official said that many times the passenger is not able to tell the location properly even at the station while seeking help, which leads to delay. After the security personnel receive the alert, anyone can pull the pressed button.
