As a part of the Mission Begin Again, Mumbai has been easing its lockdown restrictions which have led to the lawyer’s association demanding permission to travel on the local train in view of the commencement of court.
On Thursday, the High Court referred the matter to the state government. Moreover, it also ordered it to clarify the role in this regard within a week. Even though the local trains are not ferrying regular citizens, the lawyer’s union had earlier demanded that the lawyers be allowed to travel on the suburban locomotives run for essential services. A limited number of suburban locomotives are being run for essential service personnel at the moment.
The actual functioning of the High Court and the lower courts have begun. However, due to lack of public transport, lawyers are facing many difficulties in reaching the respective courts. Therefore, a modified demand was made by the petitioners that the lawyers should now be allowed to travel locally. The court also took note of their demand and asked the state government whether the lawyer’s proposal was pending. However, it was reiterated by the government stating that lawyers could not be immediately allowed to travel locally.
The local train service in the metropolitan has been shut for general passengers for the last five months due to the coronavirus outbreak. However, the services are operational for employees working in the state and central government.
