Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) has resumed bus services in Uran from Wednesday after a nine-month suspension. There was a demand for the restoration of bus services for the last few months. Now, with this, the demand of passengers has been finally fulfilled.
NMMT buses are in high demand for travel between Uran and Navi Mumbai. But after the tragic incident at Khopte in Uran in February, NMMT suspended its services indefinitely, citing safety concerns for employees and profiteering on the route.
The closure of bus services had a significant impact on Uran residents. It particularly affected the elderly, women, students and workers due to limited public transport options. Commuters had to resort to private transport services. As a result, travel time and cost increased.
NMMT has completely closed routes 30, 31 and 34 connecting Uran to Koparkhairane, Juinagar railway station and Kalamboli respectively. While alternative trains have been made, the Uran to Belapur and Nerul routes run for an hour from Uran railway station. This has led to long waits for passengers going to Navi Mumbai and Mumbai.
In addition, passengers have to pay extra for rickshaw transport from Uran town to the railway station. Sudhakar Patil of Uran Samajik Sanstha said, "The closure of the service has caused inconvenience to passengers, due to which there has been a constant demand from the residents of Uran to start it at the earliest."
