In an unsettling incident on Saturday morning, passengers traveling on the Titwala-CSMT air-conditioned local train were unable to alight at Dadar station due to an oversight by the train manager. Hundreds of commuters were trapped inside the train as the doors remained closed during the scheduled one-minute halt at the station.
The train arrived at Dadar at 10:05 am and departed a minute later, but the doors, controlled by the train manager, were not opened. As the train resumed its journey, panic spread among passengers, who had no choice but to wait until the train reached the next stop, Parel, to disembark.
The Central Railway (CR) has taken immediate action, suspending the train manager, Gopal Dhake, and initiating an investigation into the incident. A CR official confirmed the suspension and stated that this lapse caused serious inconvenience to passengers, and appropriate measures will be implemented to prevent similar situations in the future.
Mumbai’s air-conditioned local trains are equipped with automated doors operated through a control panel in the train manager’s cabin. These doors open and close only upon receiving commands from the manager, making the error particularly concerning.
The incident has sparked frustration among daily commuters, who have voiced concerns about the accountability and training of railway staff. Regular commuters stated that the railway staff should be trained thoroughly to avoid such lapses as this could have been avoided with better attentiveness. This incident highlights the importance of operational diligence and the need for consistent monitoring to ensure passenger safety and convenience on Mumbai’s suburban railway network.
