Mumbai North West MP Ravindra Waikar has urged the central government to rehabilitate the slums around Mumbai International Airport and use the vacated space to construct an additional runway. He also called for amendments to the funnel zone regulations, which have stalled the redevelopment of old buildings near the airport for years.

Due to the increasing number of flights arriving at the Mumbai International Airport, there has been a need to construct an additional runway. Due to the increasing number of aircrafts, the runways are not available for landing. Due to this, air traffic gets stuck. To solve this problem, it is necessary to rehabilitate the slum near the airport and create an additional runway at that place, Ravindra Waikar has demanded.

He has sent a letter to Union Aviation Minister Keenjarappu Naidu in this regard. Similarly, while redeveloping the buildings around the airport, the rule of funnel zone has to be followed. There are restrictions on the height of buildings in this area. Waikar has also demanded in the letter that the redevelopment of old buildings around the airport has been stalled for many years due to the Funnel Zone rules.

In order to solve this serious problem, a joint meeting of the officials of all the relevant departments, public representatives etc. related to this subject should be held. It is necessary to discuss all the above topics in detail in this meeting and take appropriate steps to solve this problem. While rehabilitating the slum dwellers here, it is necessary to provide them with good houses, water and other basic facilities, Waikar has also suggested.
