Mumbai has recorded 374 deaths in 351 road accidents in 2023. Most of those killed were pedestrians and people on two-and three-wheelers. The data came from a recent report by the Mumbai Traffic Police and the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety.

The report showed a 39% drop in traffic deaths compared to 2015. Still, the numbers were concerning. Two- and three-wheeler occupants made up 48% of the fatalities. Pedestrians accounted for 40% of the deaths.

Men formed the majority of the victims, with 82% of the total deaths. Almost half of the men who died (47%) were aged between 20 and 39 years. Many motorbike riders who died were between 20 and 29 years old.

Hit-and-run cases accounted for 38% of all fatal accidents. Pedestrians were the victims in 54% of these incidents. Most fatalities and injuries occurred near the Western Express Highway, Sion-Bandra Link Road, and Baiganwadi signal junction.

Many pedestrian deaths happened at busy locations. These included the Worli seaface junction, Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road, and Sion-Panvel Highway.

The Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marg had the most deaths and injuries per kilometre. In 2023, Mumbai's roads saw 10 fatalities per kilometre.

The report recommended several safety measures. It suggested lowering speed limits and stricter enforcement of seat belts and helmets. It also called for better pedestrian and cycling infrastructure and safer road designs.
