The Central Railway (CR) has finalised a detailed plan for a new long-distance train terminal at Parel. The goal will be to reduce the heavy traffic at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and increase suburban train services.
Reports suggest that the proposal will soon be sent to the Railway Board for approval. When the long-distance trains start and end at Parel, CSMT will have less pressure, which will improve overall service efficiency.
Earlier in 2016, the Mumbai Division proposed a similar terminal at Parel to the Central Railway Finance Department. However, opposition from the CR workers' union prevented the project from moving forward.
Alongside the Parel terminal project, CR is also planning to expand the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT). Currently, LTT has seven platforms and serves over 70,000 passengers daily. The plan includes adding four more platforms to enhance operational efficiency.
This will accommodate the growing number of passengers, particularly during peak seasons. At present, 26 pairs of long-distance trains start or end at LTT each day. The addition of more platforms will reportedly ease traffic and give room for more train services.
CR is also speeding up renovations at the Kalyan yard. The goal is to increase the station’s capacity to accommodate more trains and optimise operations. Additionally, two platforms at CSMT are expected to be extended by November to accommodate 24-coach trains.
