In their first match this IPL season, Mumbai Indians (MI) were defeated by Delhi Capitals, in Mumbai. However, the team registered their first win by 6 runs in the second match played against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), held at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.
MI challenged RCB with a target of 188 runs. Team Bangalore's AB de Villiers performed his best on the pitch with an aim to lead RCB to a win. However, Malinga's delivery changed the game when he scored a hat-trick in the final over, giving MI, their first victory.
Mumbai Indians chose to bat first and had an impressive few overs initially. Openers Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock gave an aggressive start to the innings with a partnership of 52-runs until the first wicket, where Quinton was dismissed in the seventh over. Rohit Sharma was out with two runs less for his half-century. He scored 48 runs from 33 balls with eight fours and one six. After his dismissal, Yuvraj Singh started his game with three sixes off the first three balls in the 14th over. However, he was dropped on the fourth ball.
From the RCB front, the team did not have a good start in this match. Captain Virat Kohli fell short of four runs for a half-century but scored 46 runs for the team. This match also celebrated his completion of 5000 runs in the IPL. With this achievement, he became the second person after Suresh Raina to make a mark, who completed his 5000 runs in the first match this IPL season.
AB de Villiers continued to stay with an unbeaten score of 70 runs off 41 balls. Despite the performance, the team fell short of runs, eventually losing their match against the Mumbai boys. At the end of 20 overs, RCB scored a total of 181 runs.
