Recently Netflix India released a show called Never Have I Ever. After watching the same, I wanted to watch some more of such breezy romance stories. Something that does not require 100 per cent of your attention and more importantly, makes you feel good no matter what our circumstances might be.
It is in this quest to find more such movies and shows that I stumbled upon Socha Na Tha. The movie is written and directed by Imtiaz Ali, who later went on to direct a smashing hit in the same genre in the form of Jab We Met. Nevertheless, Socha Na Tha is as sweet as it gets.
The movie was contemporary for the time that it was made in (year 2005) and even today one can relate to a lot of things narrated in the movie. Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia played the lead role in the movie and both manage to hold their ground and their chemistry adds wonders to the movie.
What works for the movie is Abhay Deol's charm (and yes his dimples), Ayesha Takia as the quintessential girl next door, the believable plot, and the ramifications that the duo has to face because of the choices that they make. The best part is that despite being a complete Bollywood film, there are o goons or villains that drop out of nowhere.
The movie plot is simple, Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia are made to meet each other by their parents so that they find each other suitable for marriage. They are unaware that Abhay already has a girlfriend and is unable to muster the courage to introduce her to his parents since she is a Christian. While he turns down the proposal of an arranged marriage with Ayesha, the duo continues to meet and even fall for each other, and later that is what brings in all the confusion.
Another fun fact about the movie was that it was supposed to be the debut movie for Ayesha Takia but it was in the making for three years and hence the movie Taran: The Wonder car (starring Ajay Devgun and Vatsal Seth) took the lead.
So if you are in a mood to watch a fun romantic movie, then we will recommend seeing Socha Na Tha.
