Mumbai on Thursday, February 13, witnessed the hottest day in the month so far as the maximum temperatures soared to 36 degree Celsius, which was 4.6° above normal.

This also sees a three-degree rise within a day. It is pertinent to note that on Wednesday, February 12, India Meteorological Department (IMD)’s Santacruz observatory recorded 32.9 degree Celsius.

On the other hand, the IMD Colaba observatory reported a high of 33.2 degrees Celsius, exceeding the average by 3.2° and Wednesday's 30 degrees Celsius.

This came hours after the city woke up to a cool morning on Thursday as the minimum temperatures dropped to 16.5 and 20 degrees at both Santacruz and Colaba observatory respectively, which is over one degree below the normal.

Meanwhile, on Friday, February 14, the minimum temperature also witnessed a gradual spike at 19.2 and 21.5 degrees Celsius at both Santacruz and Colaba observatory respectively.

For the weekend, IMD forecasts maximum and minimum temperatures of 34°C and 20°C, respectively. In its forecast bulletin, the IMD said that the maximum temperatures are likely to remain until February 16, following which the day time temperatures will drop to 33 degrees.

Weather experts attribute the rising temperatures to an influx of northwesterly winds, driven by an anti-cyclone along the western coast.

Last year during this time, Mumbai's highest temperature touched 37.5 degrees Celsius, while the month's all-time record stands at 39.6 degrees Celsius, recorded on February 25, 1966.

Besides, the month’s coldest day was observed when temperatures touched 8.5 degrees in the year 2008.
