Across natural lakes and seas in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has permitted the immersion of Ganpati idols, with the festivities set to commence in September, stated a report by Mid-Day. Although processions aren’t allowed, the authorities have instructed mandals to provide online darshan facilities.
Last year, the civic authority had asked that mandals should conduct the immersion activities at artificial ponds in their vicinity.
With immersion sites, allowed to function this year, curbs have been introduced in those locations. Only ten people for a mandal can visit the natural immersion areas. This comes along with senior citizens and children being barred from visiting these sites. The number of these sites stand at 84.
According to the BMC, people representing the mandal need to give their idols to the staff appointed by the authorities on the site, who will then proceed to take them for immersion into the water body. Other than the appointed civic staff, no one will be allowed to venture into the water body to conduct the ceremony. In addition to this, mandals have been asked to adhere to the covid-19 protocols, to ensure minimal crowding. For the celebrations this year, idols at mandals can be 4 feet, whilst those at home can be 2 feet.
President of Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti, Naresh Dahibaokar based on the report by Mid-Day acknowledged the BMC’s decision to permit immersion at public beaches and natural waterfront this year, which wasn’t the case last year. However, they are requesting that the number be increased to 20 fully vaccinated people as opposed to the current limit of 10.
