Showing plenty of resilience and strong fighting qualities Star of Canara SC recovered to overcome Mogaveera SC 3-1 in the final and emerge champions of the 11th Late Adv. A. R. Kudrolli Memorial Knockout Football Tournament 2017, organised by the Karnataka Sporting Association and played at the KSA ground, Cross Maidan.
In a battle for supremacy, Mogaveera stunned the rival citadel to take an early lead through Darsh Karkera’s strike in the seventh minute. Star of Canara fought back well and put lots of pressure on the Mogaveera defence and managed to get the equaliser through prolific striker Nehal Shetty in the 23rd minute. Six minutes later, Ashton Dias got another goal to give Star of Canara a 2-1 first-half lead.
In the second half, Mogaveera tried their best to break down the Star of Canara defence, but efforts of their forwards were thwarted by some compact defending. On the other hand, Star of Canara scored an insurance goal when seasoned media Sheldon Rego found the net in the 36 minute to seal their win and run away with the top honours.
Star of Canara received the ‘Champions Trophy’ from Chief Guest, Steven Dias, a former India striker.
Prathamesh Honavarkar, Kevin D’Silva, Glen Moraes and Nehal Shetty were awarded the Best Goalkeeper, Best Defender, Best Midfielder & Best Striker awards respectively.
Results – Final: Star of Canara 3 (Nehal Shetty 23, Ashton Dias 29, Sheldon rego 36th) beat Mogaveera SC 1 (Darsh Karkera 7).
