Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport have been ranked among the world’s most connected airports, according to the OAG Megahubs 2024 report.
While Mumbai airport ranks 2nd in India, it has seen a drop from rank 34 to 44 worldwide. In contrast, Delhi improved its global standing, moving from 25th to 24th place.
The report pointed out a shift towards Asian cities as global connectivity hubs, highlighting the growing influence of the region in international air travel.
The 2024 Megahubs report also talked about the performance of low-cost carrier (LCC) airports. In this category, Delhi and Mumbai, hubs for IndiGo, ranked much higher. Delhi climbed from 6th to 5th place, while Mumbai held its 11th position from last year.
IndiGo operates 39 per cent of flights at Delhi airport and 41 per cent at Mumbai, as per OAG data. Delhi's total LCC connections are 11,099 across 156 destinations, while Mumbai has 8,461 connections over 127 destinations. In terms of overall flight connections, Delhi records 21,781, compared to 12,849 at Mumbai.
The report compared the number of scheduled international connections and the destinations served by each airport. London’s Heathrow retained its title as the world’s most connected airport. British Airways is the primary airline at Heathrow.
These airlines have collectively placed large orders. Between February 2023 and January of this year, they ordered over 1,110 planes worth INR 140 billion at list price.
