Under the Intelligent Traffic Monitoring System (ITMS) system, artificial intelligence (AI)-based cameras have been installed at 52 locations on both sides of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.

These advanced cameras utilise radar technology to monitor vehicle speed, and violators are issued electronic challans.

Using this technology, the speed of vehicles is being measured. Action will be taken if the vehicle is driven faster than the speed limit. Earlier, action was taken through each camera if there was no seat belt. However, now the seat belt action will be taken only once through the ‘AI’ camera.

‘The ‘ITMS’ system has been implemented by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Through the cameras installed under ITMS, e-challans are being issued to vehicles violating traffic rules such as not wearing seat belts, using mobile while driving, and not following lane discipline.

Deputy Regional Transport Officer Rahul Jadhav has appealed to all vehicle owners to follow all rules while driving and to be vigilant to ensure that the speed limit is not violated.

Additionally, all the cameras and toll booths will soon be equipped with automatic number plate recognition, which will enable the police to issue e-challans, officials added.

According to regulations, light motor vehicles (cars) in the ghats (mountain areas) have a speed limit of 60 km/h, while all other vehicles must adhere to a limit of 40 km/h. Outside the ghats, light motor vehicles are permitted to travel at speeds of up to 100 km/h, while all other vehicles are restricted to 80 km/h.
