The month of June has come to an end, yet Mumbai and its suburbs have experienced below-normal rainfall.
This development comes despite the monsoon arrived 2 days prior, i.e on June 9, than its usual expected onset.
As per data, till June 16, the city had received 198 mm of rain and 128 mm in the suburbs. However, owing to the moderate rainfall in the past few days, Mumbai received only 347 mm of rain as on June 30. It shows a significant deficit of nearly 35 per cent.
As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), an average rainfall of 537 mm should have been recorded in June, but due to the inactive monsoon, the expected rainfall did not occur.
According to data received from the BMC, the city received 17.64 mm of rain, 28.38 mm in the eastern suburbs and 23.54 mm in the western suburbs in the last 24 hours, i.e. from 8 am on Saturday to 8 am on Sunday.
Meanwhile, seven lakes level that supply water to Mumbai have not yet increased. As of Monday morning, July 1, only 5.91 per cent of the total water storage was recorded in these lakes.
