Sharad Pawar's NCP leader Jitendra Awhad has approached the High Court seeking consolidation of the cases filed in various places in connection with the allegation of tearing the photograph of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. The court also took cognizance of Awhad's petition and issued a notice to the state government and the Director General of Police on Tuesday and ordered them to clarify their position on the petition.
Three cases have been registered against Awhad in Raigad and Pune districts. He has petitioned for its consolidation. A bench of Justice Revati Dere and Justice Prithviraj Chavan issued a notice to the state's Director General of Police along with the government.
The state government has decided to include the draft of Manusmriti in the curriculum of primary schools in the state. After the state government was criticised from various quarters over this decision, the government clarified that the draft of Manusmriti will not be included in the syllabus. But, protesting against the government's decision, Awhad staged a protest on 29 May 2024 near Chavdar Lake at Mahad in Raigad district. At that time, while protesting the state government and tearing up the controversial writings, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar's photograph was also torn. However, Awhad has claimed in the petition that this photograph was accidentally torn by him.
After this incident, a total of three cases were registered against him, two in Raigad district and one in Bund Garden police station in Pune. Awhad has demanded to consolidate them in the petition.
