The Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) has ordered the evacuation of 41 structures in Nalasopara. Civic authorities announced on Sunday, July 7, that these buildings were private encroachments on municipal property.
Former corporator of the Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA), Sitaram Gupta and his associates are accused of illegally acquiring 30 acres from private landowners and another 30 acres designated for government projects in Agarwal Nagar, Nalasopara East.
This government land was designated for dumping ground and a water purifying plant. They allegedly used fake ownership records to sell the land to other builders.
In 2006, former corporator Sitaram Gupta and his son Arun Gupta started constructing buildings illegally on this land without Construction Permits (CC) and Occupancy Certificates (OC). Between 2010 and 2012, 41 unauthorised construction projects were dismantled in the area.
Landowner Ajay Sharma filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Bombay High Court (HC). The court directed the VVMC to remove the unauthorised homes of the residents. Later, Sitaram Gupta was arrested by Achole police in September 2022. He was charged with constructing 41 unlawful structures and land theft involving both government and private properties in Achole, Vasai East.
In June 2023, the civic body filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Gupta and his associate Vijay Tambat, also known as Vijay Salvi. Both are absconding.
They were charged with a common intention of using a forged document as genuine, possessing a forged document, forgery, forgery of valuable security, forgery for the purpose of cheating, and criminal trespass. Both were declared absconding.
