The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) undertook a massive cleanup operation to manage the aftermath of New Year celebrations on Tuesday night, December 31. The operation focused on popular public spots like Marine Drive, the Gateway of India, Girgaon Chowpatty, and other crowded locations.

On New Year's Eve, thousands of people gathered in parks, beaches, and public spaces across the city to welcome the New Year. These celebrations generated large amounts of trash, including plastic waste, which led to a lot of littering.

The civic body started a special cleanup campaign to address the situation. Key locations targeted included the Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Girgaon Chowpatty, Byculla Zoo Junction, Kalanagar Junction, Bandra Station, Juhu Chowpatty, Gorai Chowpatty, Borivali market, Aksa Chowpatty, Marve Chowpatty, and Mankhurd.

A workforce of 5,000 people participated in the operation. This included BMC employees, volunteers, labourers, and civic officials from various institutions. The cleanup effort utilised 70 types of equipment. This included compactors, e-sweepers, JCBs, dumpers, beach cleaning tools, Bobcats, litter pickers, and misting machines.

As a result of these efforts, the team successfully removed 11.4 metric tonnes of waste from the city. In addition to cleanup activities, safety measures were also enhanced. Four guard towers were set up at the Gateway of India and seven at Marine Drive. Barricades and improved lighting were installed for public safety.

As per reports, the areas were cleaned during the night shift using heavy machinery and returned to their original state.
