The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning on a 22 acre plot at the entrance of Filmcity in Goregaon. This project will set up a casting yard and boring machine between Mulund and Goregaon. For this project, the administration is planning to cut around 700 trees.
The filmcity site is located adjacent to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) which is a haven for wildlife like leopards, deer, etc. Also, peacocks and leopards are often found roaming around Filmcity.
The filmcity Managing Director Swati Mhase-Patil informed that the BMC has asked for the land parcel, but they are yet to decide on it. Environmentalist D Stalin of the NGO Vanashakti has opposed the decision to cut trees. He mentioned in the letter that “We find it very disturbing that the BMC is giving permission for felling of trees across the city of Mumbai every day.”
Environmentalist D Stalin said the filmcity falls under the eco sensitive zone (ESZ) of SGNP. Several records show that Filmcity has illegally occupied 51 acres of forest land and has refused to return the land to the forest department.
