The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is making a new urban forestry park along the Mithi River in Marol, Andheri. It will feature 10,000 trees of 100 different species. The park covers 3.5 acres and is set to open in October. The project started in June 2024 and is almost complete.

In total, the park will include a 1.90-acre garden built on municipal land next to the river. Additional land was also reclaimed from the Marol Cooperative Industrial Estate. The park will feature a wooden pathway for visitors. It will also have flowers, medicinal plants, and fruit-bearing trees to create a natural space for locals.

The park also uses treated wastewater for irrigation. Kardali trees have been planted in a special section to filter the water before it irrigates the plants. The sustainable design will help the park stay green. The park will also have a butterfly garden.

In addition to the park, BMC is conducting a massive tree-planting drive to improve air quality. In recent months, many cleanliness campaigns have also led to better air in the city. Now BMC is planning to increase the efforts by planting even more trees.

As part of this plan, 4,416 traditional Indian trees and 33,750 Miyawaki trees will be planted across 26 locations. These include rare species like Bakul, Tamhan, Tamarind, Bahawa, Neem, and Mango. The goal is to plant as many trees as possible in parks and open spaces to fight pollution.

The civic body introduced the Miyawaki method in 2020. It allows for dense tree planting in small areas while focusing on planting fruit and flower trees. Following its success, BMC started working on a park with Vedic themes in Malad’s Malvani district. This park will cover 6.5 acres and include 10,000 trees.
