In an attempt to avert flooding in western suburbs of KandivaliMalad and Borivali, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has built a protective wall alongside the Poisar river's banks, reports stated.

According to accounts, to end the problem of flooding, the BMC constructed a 100-meter-long retaining wall along the banks of the river in Kandivali's Dahanukarwadi. This is reportedly where mainly the water overflows during monsoon. Civic officials have been quoted in narratives elaborating on how the complete riverbed was usurped by slum dwellers which hindered the river flow.

A civic official elucidated that there were 29 such shanties and huts that hindered the water flow. The official added that they have removed the structures from the adjoining areas in addition to curating a wall to avert further encroachment.

Based on narratives, civic officials have claimed that the majority of the slum dwellers were illegal encroaches, therefore, it was not their duty to offer them alternative accommodation. The officials further remarked that for many years, the BMC has been attaining complaints of the river overflowing in the area.

It has been reported that in 15 days the civic body evicted the encroachers and built a wall. The drive was reportedly started only after issuing notices to the encroachers. Following this, an area inspection was undertaken and a soil test was undertaken. This was trailed by beginning the construction of a wall and on June 11, the project was completed.

Narratives suggest that the civic body had last year proclaimed the Poisar river rejuvenation plan that entailed putting up sewage treatment plants on the river's banks. It is anticipated that after the monsoon, the BMC will commence widening the riverbed by removing the illegal encroachers in the remaining areas. This is hoped to enable the smooth flow of water.

For those unversed, the Poisar river which is 11.15 km long beings from the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) and via the Marve Creek flows into the Arabian Sea.
