Right to Information (RTI) is an act of the Parliament of India to provide for setting out the practical regime of the right to information for citizens. However, in a recent incident, after Hindustan Times sought a query for the number of potholes recorded from 2008-2019 the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) replied by saying that the engineers are busy in development work.

According to the RTI Act, if the person is not satisfied with the answer the applicant has options like filing first appeal, second appeal and going to the court. People have condemned the statement by the BMC and said that the authorities should be providing facts in an RTI and not their personal opinions.
Meanwhile, RTI activists slammed the BMC citing that the reply is against the spirit of transparency for which the RTI Act was brought into effect. In the reply, BMC further said the sought information is “voluminous” and the same can be inspected by visiting the ward.
